Here is an image of a typical mental band. As you can see, they are all in black clothes and are a band who are part of the metal genre in the rock music world.
An important aspect of any metal video is the image that the band and the actors give off. To relate to the genre and for the video to look effective, the characters have to look both authentic as members of the band, as fans and as actors. Therefore in my group, we decided that we will be strict with our 'code of clothing' and i do feel that we have successfully incorparated this in our video, as every shot where the clothing changes, we still look part of the metal genre and we love the idea that the band suit their genre so well, as of them wearing band teeshirts and wearing black!
Mise en scene:
As a group, we are very happy with the use of mise en scene in our video. The music videos that we have researched contain things such as band t-shirts which add to the authentic theme of the video, which is metal and showing that ours is no different. The main characters room is full of of band posters and there is a part of our video where we have used this to our advantage and used in a graphic match of sean screaming, as the male in the poster is also screaming. This is a small but effective addition to our video and we think that it emphasizes the music video's tone.
Editing and Filming:
- One of the main aims we had in our filming process was for the editing to reflect the pace and emotion of our chosen song song and we feel we have achieved this. A fast pace indicates that there is more aggression and a rushed atmosphere, then the slower pace shows sadness and thought. We believe that timing was also a key element as we had to be so precise with our shots so they would fit the song and the synch of the words sung by the band. So this shows that most of our editing was based around being in time with the song, especially the band members.
- We aimed to have a dark atmosphere to our video so filming at night helped with this a lot. Yet, this was hard in terms of lighting and making sure that the important characters (me and Sean) and events in the video's narrative were still visible, even though filmed in the dark. We used alot of chiaroscuro in our video and it fits the mood and authentic look of our 'metal' music video.
