Analysis of poster and cd/dvd covers

This is an interesting DVD cover as it also sticks to the simple colours of white black and red which fit in with the rock genre. I Liked this DVD cover because the close up shot of the hand with a microphone in it. This shows the victory the band feels and its intresting with this DVD as is it of them live. It has shots of the crowd and a band member on the back. I like how the images are dark with a bit of red then the writing on the DVD cover is interesting. On a whole it is very striking and i like the close up of the hand. If i was to create a cover i would probably use a close up of of the microphone or a band members instrument to make it strikng. This has inspired me to do this kind of layout for the dvd cover. I think that band shots and good effects can make the cover look very professional and can attract an audience who have listened to them before, or, seen them live and found it a life time experience.

This is a good CD cover for me to analyse as if is of a Metal album. The classic black and red colours fit in with the rock genre. It is simple yet effective as the image is all red on a black background, but the link to its title 'the poison' and the colours chosen show how a simple image with hardly any colour can be effective. It is clever how the creators of this artistic feature have used a lighter red to show the light coming in from the door and the shadow reflecting upon her! From seeing this i think that it is good to show the genre you fit into as a band by using the correct colours and images. That way you can approach your audience in he correct way.

Analysis of cd cover (inspiration for our cd cover):

I chose to analyse this cd cover because it is simple but its simplicity makes it effective. The white background sets all of the attention on the photo of the band and the band name/album name. The band photo is a sort of silhouette in this picture. From analysing this, i think that me and Ben could try and use this effect when doing our cd/dvd digipak cover. It's efefctive and it shows how we have noticed the usage of this kind of imagery in other media conventions portraying the metal/rock genre.

POSTER:

This poster is of Bullet For My Valentine. I chose to analyse this because, first of all, it sticks to the 'dark' colour scheme of its genre. I like how the expression of the band is quite neutral and the lead singer (slightly mor ein the foreground) is easily noticable. Their choice os clothing also reflects the 'metal' genre and the title being in white stands out on the dark background. The best effect is the bullet hole in the foreground. It looks like the camera lens is broken and it creates emphasis on this poster as the name 'bullet for my valentine' is reflected through it.

Magazine advertisement:

This advertisement is a good example of what 'capturing attention' should look like. I like the fact that the colours are neutral - white, black, slight red and a sight green. It has an attractive background, image and also there is text in the right place. The band are not shown on this poster but you can see them, slightly, on the cd cover which is an idea we may use. I like the different fonts that are shown on this page so i think that we could establish this in our media product.

DIGIPAK:

This is an image from *google* images of a typical digipak. As you can see there is a repetitive use of yellow and unusually, where the CD is places, there is no image. On many digipaks (like one i have at home) there are images below where the CD goes which makes it more interesting to look at. A digipak should be more attractive than a normal CD as you get more from it, not just 10-13 songs, you may get live footagem music videos, live songs, bonus songs etc.
On this digipak, the images are different on every section which is interesting, but me and Ben believe that we will like to use the same image and make it look different/use it in a different way as it is the main selling point of our digipak and poster. The image will greatly reflect our music video and song choice.

Initial ideas for own video's

Camera angles:
Extreme close up
Medium close up's
Mid shot
long shot
P.O.V shot
Eyeline match
Low angle
High angle
Ariel shot
over the shoulder
canted angle

Editing:
quick cuts
fading from black
cut to flashback - shown by a black and white shot to signify the difference (it looks lighter than the darker depressing shots which shows how he used to be happier with the girl.)
Graphic match
shot reverse shot (shown by editing quick cuts of their faces)
fade to black/another black &white shot at the end (this could show how she is left upset or if we use the black and white shot, it could show how she's just a memory to him and he is over her after getting his revenge)

Special Effects:
Slow motion(possible at the end of the song with the walking away shot of Sean)
- we could possibly use the green screen in the band shots to add an edge to the shots (we will do this is we have enough editing time)

Target Audience

This is an image of a typical 'metal' band *from google images*

Our target audience as said in the analysis, are people who listen to 'rock' music preferably the 'metal' genre. People who will be interested in our music video will be students - working class with an age group of fifteen to twenty five.
There are a lot more males who listen to metal music but our video is aimed at both genders. This will be shown very clearly through our video due to the costumes, lighting, mood and the music chosen (Mise En Scene). Theory is so important within music videos and without it every video would be the same. A music video needs to have something that aims to its audience, therefore a pop music video wouldn't aim to someone who likes rock. People who listen to 'metal' music generally wear band tee shirts and darker clothes, we will reflect this point in our video so that this definition is shown. My group hopes to achieve showing this in our video and after it's creation, we will do a survey to our target audience to see if it has reached their expectations. We will also choose a small group of people, forming a focus group to view our video. Once they have seen it, me and Ben will see what they thought and ask them anything they believe could be better. From this my group will know what we can do to make the final video better than before and that now it will reach higher expectations to appeal to our target audience!
